Whoever, being a public servant and having the custody of any State prisoner or prisoner of war, voluntarily allows such prisoner to escape from any place in which such prisoner is confined, shall be punished with imprisonment for life, or imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to ten years, and shall also be liable to fine.

Legal Notes & Explanations: Section 156 BNS penalises public servants allowing state prisoners to escape. Those searching for 156 3 in BNS should note that magistrate investigation orders (old CrPC 156(3)) are not under 156 BNS; 156 3 in BNS searches correspond to section 175(3) BNSS, whereas 156 3 in BNS queries are distinct from section 156 BNS, as 156 BNS addresses state prisoner custody under 156, clarifying 156 3 in BNS procedural law under 156 BNS.
